During pregnancy a woman has to go through significant changes in her body. Sometimes it is difficult for her to determine whether they are natural, and therefore frightened even by minor tingling in one or another area of the body. The same applies to the groin pain during pregnancy. It can be a normal phenomenon, and at the same time, may indicate the presence of a disease.
Groin pain during pregnancy causes inconvenience and anxiety. To exclude the presence of ailments, you need to consult your doctor. Worrying in vain is not necessary. Perhaps your condition is within the norm. The reasons that cause discomfort can be either physiological or pathological.
Unpleasant sensations can arise both in the early stages of pregnancy, and at later stages.
At a period of up to 30 weeks, this phenomenon is usually caused by the formation of a yellow body in the ovary. The pain may occur in the right and left ovary. The yellow body is an endocrine organ and is produced at the place of the fertilized egg. This body produces progesterone, which is necessary for the normal course of pregnancy. There are cases of growth of the yellow body and, as a consequence, development of the cyst. It is formed at the side of the ovary, where the egg was located.
In later pregnancy, pain in the groin may also occur.
There are several reasons for this:
- Lack of potassium in the body of a future mother;
- The presence of a serious burden on the musculoskeletal system. It occurs due to the rapid growth of the uterus;
- The influence of the hormone relaxin, which causes weakening of cartilages and ligaments.
If no disease is found during the examination and one of the above causes is diagnosed, the woman is prescribed the following:
- Medicines containing potassium;
- A regime that provides more rest, sitting, lying, rather than spending a long time standing on your feet;
- Use of a bandage, which will reduce the burden on the musculoskeletal system.
As can be seen, the physiological causes are very harmless. They should not cause anxiety. Nevertheless, this does not mean that you don’t need to consult your doctor if you experience groin pain during pregnancy. Keep in mind that this pain can be caused by other, more dangerous factors that can affect the development of the fetus.
Pathological Causes of Groin Pain during Pregnancy
There are many more such provocateurs.
It is interrupted spontaneously (which is accompanied by a fallopian tube rupture) if the problem is not noticed in time or due to surgery. Carrying a baby in such a case is impossible. Thus, the earlier the pathology is detected, the better. With surgical intervention at an early stage, the fallopian tube can be saved.
In addition, this will allow determining the reason why the fetus did not enter the uterus and began to develop in the tube.
With ectopic pregnancy there is a drawing pain in the groin area. It can be periodic or constant. As a rule, this pathology is accompanied by dizziness, bloody discharge, sometimes loss of consciousness.
Inflammation of Lymph Nodes
Do not ignore this ailment! It is important to establish the cause and undergo a course of treatment in time.
The disease is characterized by the following symptoms:
- There is local temperature increase in the area between the leg and the genitals or slightly higher;
- It hurts when pressing on the area where there is an inflammation;
- Local redness of the skin;
- Swelling, the appearance of induration.
Pain in the lymph nodes located in the groin can be caused by infections (fungal, viral, bacterial), trauma, and venereal diseases (gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia, etc.). In addition, groin pain during pregnancy in this case may be caused by transplants rejection, sarcoidosis, tumors, etc.
In any case, if you notice that there are any manifestations of the disease in the lymph nodes, you should urgently consult a doctor. Depending on the stage of the disease, conservative or surgical treatment is prescribed. Still, during pregnancy, doctors try to choose a sparing way to get rid of the disease.
If you experience groin pain during pregnancy, do not engage in self-medication. You can only make the situation worse. Treatment is carried out only after the examination by the doctor.
To reduce the risk of inflammation of the lymph nodes, do not neglect hygiene. Try to avoid injuries to this area, and if there are scratches, treat them in time with disinfectants.
Sometimes groin pain during pregnancy may occur while walking and standing up exactly because of inguinal hernia. While developing, the baby presses on this area, which causes painful sensations.
This disease is most common in men, but pregnant women are also susceptible to it. Complete disposal of it is possible only with the help of surgical intervention.
During pregnancy, such a surgery is contraindicated. Therefore, conservative methods of treatment are used that allow a woman to wait for childbirth – wearing a bandage, performing gymnastics, massage, etc. The method of birth is determined by the doctor. If the hernia is very big, most likely, the future mother will have to give birth with the help of C-section.
To reduce the risk of manifestation of this ailment during pregnancy, it is necessary to wear a bandage from the early stages, which will minimize the burden on the lower abdomen.
It is known that, during pregnancy a woman experiences an aggravation of diseases of some organs. Kidneys are one of the first in this list. Therefore, aching or sharp groin pain during pregnancy may occur during attacks of renal colic. As a rule, the future mother suffers from this in the first trimester of gestation and during the last weeks of pregnancy.
Keep in mind that only the doctor can confirm or exclude the disease after the results of the examination. For getting rid of manifestations of the ailment pregnant women are usually advised to use drinks with diuretics of natural origin, for example, berry or fruit drinks. The outflow of urine will allow faster removal of stones, which will facilitate the state of the future mother.
In many cases the disease causes not only aching pain, but also spasms. In such situations doctors prescribe special medications.
Do not forget about physical exercises that can minimize the manifestation of the disease. For example, you can practice the knee-elbow position for at least 15 minutes a day. This will reduce pain.
Even if a woman did not face this problem before, during pregnancy the illness can make itself felt. It can be accompanied by drawing or bursting pain in the groin or other organs. Because of the partial compression of the veins, the blood flow deteriorates. As a result, the blood stagnates and presses against the walls of the vessels. This phenomenon is dangerous because the vessels can burst. That’s why it makes sense to consult a doctor immediately after detecting the problem.
Varicosity can be manifested by swelling, seizures, pain between the legs and the groin area, itching. Basically, these symptoms manifest themselves at night.
This disease can be felt at the inguinal, lumbar, and gluteal area. As a rule, sensations are acute. Also, sometimes it can be difficult to determine the localization of pain.
This disease is not as harmless as it may seem. Genital herpes can be an indication for a caesarean section if the disease has occurred between the 38th and 40th weeks of pregnancy, i.e. just before the birth.
This is due to the fact that the disease often causes the development of various pathologies in the baby.
Any pain during pregnancy should alert the future mother and become the reason for an examination.
How to Deal with Groin Pain during Pregnancy?
As mentioned above, groin pain during pregnancy is often a sign of serious illness. That’s why, when the first symptoms occur, you should immediately inform your doctor about it.
The doctor will appoint the necessary examination and consultations of specialist physicians (surgeon, urologist, dermatovenerologist, neurologist) to clarify the diagnosis and conduct the necessary course of therapy in the future. Do not tolerate pain or take medication yourself to stop it. In this situation, self-medication is unacceptable!
In case of physiological pain, no special treatment is required. It will be practically impossible to get rid of it, but you can reduce the manifestation of discomfort by following some recommendations:

If you experience groin pain during pregnancy or are concerned about an unpleasant sensations in this area, do not engage in self-medication – this is unacceptable. Be sure to contact your doctor. Only a specialist will be able to find out the true cause of unpleasant pain and prescribe the correct adequate treatment.
