But nowadays the market offers a wide range of devices that help you carry the baby with comfort. A baby carrier is one of them.

What Is A Baby Carrier?

A baby carrier is a special supporting device that allows a person holding a baby close to the body. In simple words, it is a portable seat for carrying a baby. There is huge variety of baby carriers on the market and you can find the most popular models of baby carriers, as well as compare their designs, materials and price to find the one you are looking for. Thus, everyone can choose a baby carrier that suits him/her more.

Types of Baby Carriers

Nowadays there are 3 main types of baby carriers on the market.

 A sling

A sling is a special fabric device of various designs which is used for carrying the baby. It can be used from the first months of a baby’s life and up to 2-3 years. Slings allow you carrying the baby both horizontally and vertically, while providing support to the baby’s entire body. The uniform tension of the fabric and the possibility of adjusting the sling allow holding the child’s spine in its natural position.

The most optimal fabrics for slings are considered to be fabrics of double diagonal and jacquard weaving. These fabrics are not sold in regular stores, they are made specifically for carrying children. They are completely natural: most often it is 100% cotton, sometimes with additives in the form of flax, silk, bamboo, wool and cashmere for cool weather, etc. Sling should not stretch either along or across: this gives a steady support of the baby. But on the other hand, they should slightly stretch along the diagonal. This ensures a comfortable distribution of the load. The fabric is slightly tightened exactly where it is needed, gently hugging the body of the mother and the baby.

 Wraps

Wraps are pieces of cloth (usually around 2 – 6 meters long, and 15-30 inches wide), which are wrapped around the body of the mother/father and the baby and then tied. As well as a sling, a wrap allows different positions for carrying a baby: front, back and hip one. It all depends on the length of the wrap. With a short wrap one shoulder carry is possible.

Wraps can be used for carrying a newborn and an older baby. It allows you to carry your baby in horizontal and vertical positions from the first days of life. The baby stays in the same position as in the mother’s arms. For carrying newborns, it is preferable to use diagonal weaving fabrics. Due to the peculiarities of their weaving, these fabrics provide the best fit, the possibility of point adjustment, and support for all parts of the baby’s spine, head and neck.

 “Backpack” Baby Carrier

The main aim of an ergonomic backpack is to minimize the load on the spine of the mother and not to harm the baby. An ergonomic backpack has thick wide shoulder straps that are sewn into the body of the backpack or fastened to it with safe fasteners. In addition, a wide hip belt runs along the bottom edge of the backpack. The belt is usually fastened on the back. What’s more, it is equipped with special additional fastenings. They serve as insurance: even if the belt is unbuttoned, the child will not fall out of the backpack. The hip belt removes a significant part of the load from the mother’s spine, which makes it easier to carry the baby.

A backpack baby carrier can be used for a front, back and hip carry. The permissible weight load is from 3,5 to 30 kilograms. Still, it is not advisable to use such baby carriers until the baby is 4-5 month as it is hard to make sure that the carrier provides enough support for the baby’s head and neck.
